How Minerals Affect Concentration and Productivity
The topic is presented by Paulina Borkowska – Clinical Dietitian at Holistic Nutrition Borkowska Clinic.
Did you know that the key to improving concentration and productivity may lie in minerals? In today’s fast-paced world, we often forget about the fundamental elements that fuel our bodies and minds. Minerals play a crucial role in our ability to concentrate and in our overall well-being. Unfortunately, we frequently focus on macronutrients—such as calories, proteins, fats, and carbohydrates—forgetting that without adequate minerals, they cannot be fully utilized.
Energy Production: Without Proper Mineralization, There Is No Concentration
To stay focused and productive, our bodies need energy. ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the body’s energy currency, which we generate from glucose and fats. Fats can yield three times more ATP per gram than glucose, but to utilize them efficiently, we need fully functional mitochondria. These, in turn, require the right minerals to operate properly. Without these minerals, our mitochondria cannot produce energy effectively, regardless of diet and exercise.
Key Minerals
Magnesium:
Essential for energy production (ATP), magnesium is often deficient even with supplementation. In Norwegian pharmacies, magnesium oxide is common, but it has only about a 5% absorption rate, which has minimal impact on health. For magnesium to be effectively absorbed, proper stomach function is also necessary. Supplementation must be supported by an appropriate diet and healthy habits to be effective.
Electrolytes:
Crucial for hydrating cells and the entire body. A good electrolyte balance enhances the absorption of vitamins and minerals, supports detoxification, and facilitates communication between cells. Instead of reaching for another coffee, try drinking a glass of water with electrolytes containing trace minerals—you’ll notice the difference immediately.
Iodine:
Essential for proper thyroid function—which regulates metabolism and energy levels—iodine is often deficient among Norway’s residents, affecting their concentration and productivity. Supplementation with iodine should be carefully considered, because iodized salt is not a sufficient source—iodine evaporates and dissipates just two weeks after opening. An additional issue is the low quality of fish and seafood, which often contain more heavy metals and antibiotics than valuable minerals.
Chromium:
Regulates blood glucose levels and improves insulin sensitivity, which is crucial for maintaining stable energy levels and concentration. A deficiency in chromium can lead to energy fluctuations and decreased effectiveness. It is also one of the reasons for persistent cravings for sweets and carbohydrates and difficulties with weight reduction.
Deficiency Diagnostics in Norway:
To effectively replenish deficiencies, we must first identify what we are lacking. Spectrophotometry is helpful, as it allows for precise determination of mineral levels in cells. This is an innovative method that has been used in medicine for years and is now also available in Norway.
Get to Know PureNordic
After introducing spectrophotometry to the Norwegian market, I realized there was a lack of high-quality supplements that I could recommend with a clear conscience. Together with Ihab Timraz, we created the brand PureNordic, producing supplements in northern Norway from the purest ingredients. PureNordic products were developed based on analyses of mineral deficiencies among Norway’s residents, allowing us to create a unique line of supplements tailored to individual needs.
Our mission is to take an individualized approach to supplementation, based on the body’s actual needs. Today, thanks to our innovative approach, we can understand our bodies better and tailor diet and supplementation to each person’s specific requirements
